2023 Social Trends + Top Takeaway

No one could blame you for not being up on the latest social media trends.

After all, it can sometimes feel like these trends change by the hour. And you do have a life outside of that phone in your hand.

The good news is that I’ve done some of the work for you.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend Ogilvy's 2023 Social Media Trends webinar for communications professionals to learn new valuable insights into the ever-changing landscape of social media.

Here are my four top takeaways:

1. TikTok is King

TikTok has taken the world by storm and dictates everything in the social media realm. The platform's secret sauce is its focus on promoting organic content, which the other big social platforms have moved away from. For brands, this means your content strategy must focus on making TikToks - not paid ads - to effectively connect with your audience. Duolingo is a fantastic example of brands who are doing TikTok right.

Nugget: Despite TikTok being viewed as a youth-only-platform, over 50% of its users are now over the age of 25.

2. Organic and Earned Traction is Making a Comeback

After significant ad revenue losses on the major platforms, there is a shift towards organic and earned traction in social media. This means that the most effective content will be authentic, based on a narrative and connects with a niche community.

Nugget: Creator-led, lo-fi, short videos remain the content trend aesthetic.

3. Transfer of Knowledge and Skills

Audiences are increasingly interested in a transfer of knowledge and skills. Content should be educational, entertaining, or ideally, both. This provides an opportunity for organizations to stay transparent while using public good messaging to connect with their audience.

Nugget: Micro and Nano influencers are the 2023 influencer trend, outpacing the effectiveness of Macro and Mega influencer campaigns.

4. Collaboration and Credibility

Collaboration and credibility are the essential ingredients to an influencer campaign’s success. However, even when an influencer has perceived high credibility, you should always prepare in advance for possible criticisms whenever working with an influencer before publicly launching your campaign.

Nugget: Gen-Z audiences are not afraid to call out institutions on social media, making transparency the key to effectively connecting with this growing target audience group.

By staying ahead of the social media curve and adapting to the latest trends, your organization can effectively and authentically connect with your social audiences in a meaningful way that elevates your message, while also serving your audience groups.
