Spotlighting Black History Beyond February

Cultural observance days, weeks, and months are great opportunities for us to connect with the media on timely and newsworthy stories.

And while this is a good way to get our stories in front of our audiences, we have a chance to observe greatness all year long – not only during these culturally observed moments.

Black History Month, as we know, is wrapping up today. Tomorrow, March 1, brings us an important new area of focus – Women’s History Month

Yet turning a new page on the calendar also presents a prime opportunity -- an opportunity to commit to celebrating and honoring Black excellence –and other culturally observed holidays and communities -- throughout the year.

Staying current with trending media topics and looking for ways to connect them to leaders, organizations, or events in Black communities is one way to recognize the achievements and success of those who are making a real difference.

Here are some other ways to get fresh media angles that recognize Black excellence:

  • Engage with local nonprofits that do work to support Black communities.

  • Support locally owned and Black businesses.

  • Connect with grassroots organizers, leaders, and volunteers. They will be able to tell their story and effectively communicate the work that is being done and the needs of the community better than anyone!

  • Don’t just celebrate the past – recognize and appreciate the present as well.

Recognizing the history, achievements, and significant impact that Black leaders have had on our society throughout February is a great way to honor their legacy. However, that doesn’t mean that it has to stop at the end of the month.

With the right hook, we can celebrate these important figures all year long!
